Whilst fashion is an ever changing beast, there are certain items every man should have in his repertoire as they will forever remain timeless – a good set of men’s wardrobe essentials.
After much debate, we have finally whittled it down to the following items:
A braided belt
These are readily available in tan but don’t just buy the first one you see. Make sure it is real leather with a proper plait design as this will add to its durability as well as its style.
A crisp white shirt
We switched between a white shirt and a white tee but in the end the shirt won. It’s far more versatile and can be dressed up as well as down. It’s worth spending a little extra to get the best quality you can. White shirts need a lot of laundering!
Selvedge/ raw denim jeans
If you have room for only one pair of jeans in your wardrobe, suitcase or overnight bag pack a pair of selvedge jeans. There are plenty of good suppliers out there, including YMC, Levis and Edwin. Visit eBay for some good bargains as selvedge jeans get better with wear and tear.
Chinos/cords
Our resident chino favourite is Dr Denim but H&M offer a good range for around £20 a pop. They offer the standard hues and the new season has brought bold colours to really lift an outfit. Check out Dockers new season cords in some inspirational colours and slim fits.
A tweed jacket
There was debate between velvet and tweed but in the end it came down to versatility. You can simply wear tweed with more. Our advice is to go for a vintage piece. You can grab a bargain like the Paul Smith one shown here that we picked up for £16 on eBay!
Part two looks at men’s wardrobe essentials in accessories and outerwear.

It took several years to find my one, QC. Keep checking back on eBay and also look at outlet stores such as M&S, Next and TK Maxx. I picked up a nice DB Jacket in an M&S outlet today and noted several nice Tweed and a superb purple velvet jacket. Unfortunately none in my size. Boo!
I’m on the hunt for a tweed blazer as we speak!
