We all want to know how to find the perfect foundation so we asked celebrity Makeup Artist Merrell Hollis for his tips on finding that magic product.
Merrell has worked on Wendy Williams, Christina Milian, Joy Bryant, Naomi Campbell, Diddy and Usher. He has also collaborated with L’Oreal and their subsidiaries.
Take heed of his wise words:
The common mistake he sees among women of colour is the wrong foundation choice – sometimes too heavy or not enough coverage, often we are wearing the wrong colour or at times it’s just the wrong formula for our skin.
When looking for the correct foundation you should always take the following into consideration:
- Formula – is your skin oily, dry or combination?
- Coverage – do you want a tinted moisturizer or full coverage?
- Texture – do you need a powder, liquid or cream?
- Colour – this is the most important factor. You need to know the undertones of your skin; if you are red and you choose a yellow based foundation you will end up with an ashy look. Try different shades, test them by applying the foundation at the bottom of your cheek – take a look in the mirror, look away then look back – if the foundation seems to have disappeared into your skin you have a winner.
Some of our favourite brands are MAC (of course), Bobbi Brown (recent converts) and YSL Le Tient le Touche Éclat. We need to try Lancôme, Chanel and Estee Lauder next.
Which brand do you think works well on brown skin?

Is it me or has it almost become a trend now for girls to wear ill matching foundations? Surely it cannot be because they think they look good!
Good post. I’ll send a lot of girls to this. I may even print some handouts for the journey home! LOL!
